What we check

Nine things that decide whether your ad data is real

Most tracking problems are invisible. Your ads still run and your reports still fill up, but the numbers are wrong. Here’s what the checker looks for.

Google Tag Manager

The container that loads your tags. We open it and read what’s inside, not just whether it’s there.

GA4

Your website analytics. We look for your measurement ID on the page, in Tag Manager and in your Google tag.

Google Ads conversions

The Google Ads tag, plus the conversion tags that tell Google which clicks turned into leads.

Conversion Linker

The small tag that lets Google match an ad click to the enquiry that follows. Easy to miss, costly to skip.

Meta Pixel

How Meta learns who enquires and buys. Without it, Meta can’t find more people like your customers.

Doubled tags

Tags that load twice, usually once on the page and again in Tag Manager. They make your numbers look better than they are.

Old Universal Analytics code

Leftover code from the old Google Analytics. It stopped working in 2023 and now just slows your site down.

Cookie consent

Whether a consent banner or Google consent mode is set up. It’s required if you advertise to people in Europe or the UK.

Phone calls and forms

Click-to-call links and enquiry forms on the page, and whether anything is set up to count them.

Your score

How to read your score

The score weighs what matters most. Missing GA4 or Google Ads conversions costs more points than a missing consent banner.

85 to 100: Looking good

Your core tracking is in place. Keep checking after site changes, plugin updates and new campaigns.

60 to 84: A few leaks

The basics work, but gaps mean Google and Meta are bidding on partial data.

35 to 59: Big gaps

Important tracking is missing. Your ads are likely optimising on guesswork.

Under 35: Flying blind

Very little tracking. You can’t tell which marketing brings in leads, so fix this before you spend more.

Honest limits

What an outside check can’t see

This tool reads your page and your Tag Manager container, the same way a browser would. That catches most setup problems. But some things only show up from inside your accounts.

If your score looks good but your leads don’t match what Google Ads reports, that’s the sign to dig deeper. That’s exactly what our Google Ads audit does.

Common problems

The four tracking mistakes we see most

These show up in almost every account we audit. The checker flags the first signs of each one.

The problem

GA4 counts every lead twice

GA4 is added by a plugin and again in Tag Manager. Your reports double, and Google Ads bids on inflated numbers.

How we fix it

We remove the duplicate, keep one clean setup in Tag Manager and test every event before and after.

The problem

Phone calls aren’t counted

For many local businesses, calls are the best leads. If they’re not tracked, Google thinks those ads don’t work.

How we fix it

We add call tracking and phone click tracking, then decide which calls count as real leads.

The problem

Conversions only come from GA4 imports

It works, but it’s slower and less precise, and you miss out on enhanced conversions.

How we fix it

We add Google Ads conversion tags with enhanced conversions, and keep GA4 for reporting.

The problem

Forms count clicks, not enquiries

The conversion fires when someone clicks Send, even if the form fails. Your numbers look better than they are.

How we fix it

We trigger on the real success message or thank-you page, then test it end to end.
