Google Tag Manager setup that stays tidy, tested and documented

Your tracking tags are the plumbing behind every report and every bid. We keep them in one tidy Google Tag Manager container, test every change before it goes live, and write down what each tag does, so nothing breaks quietly later.

  • One clean container
  • Every tag tested
  • Versioned and reversible
  • Documentation you keep

The basics

What Google Tag Manager does, in plain English

Google Tag Manager, or GTM, is a free tool that sits on your website and manages your tracking code for you. Instead of pasting code for Google Ads, GA4, Meta and others into your site, you install GTM once. Every tag after that is added, changed or removed inside GTM.

Each tag has a trigger, which is the rule for when it runs, like “when the quote form is sent successfully”. Variables pass in the details, like the order value. Get those three right and your data is clean. Get them wrong and you get double counting, missing sales, or tags firing on every page.

GTM also keeps a version history. Every published change is saved, so if something goes wrong, we can roll back to the last good version in minutes.

It’s the engine room behind our GA4 conversion tracking, call tracking and enhanced conversions.

What we set up

Everything your ads and reports rely on

One tidy container that feeds every platform you advertise on.

Google tag and GA4

One Google tag for GA4 and Google Ads, with the right settings and no duplicates.

Conversion events

Forms, calls, bookings and purchases, each firing once, with value and order details. More on GA4 tracking.

Enhanced conversions

Customer email and phone fields mapped to the Google tag and scrambled in the browser. See enhanced conversions.

Call tracking

Google’s phone snippet, so visitors from your ads see a forwarding number. See call tracking.

Meta and other platforms

Meta Pixel, LinkedIn, TikTok and others from the same tidy container. Here’s our Meta Pixel setup guide.

Consent mode

If you use a consent banner, every tag respects what the visitor chose.

Your options

Browser, gateway or server-side?

There is more than one way to run your tags. Here is how the three main setups compare.

SetupHow it worksGood forEffort
Standard GTMTags load from Google in the visitor’s browserMost small and medium businessesLow
Google tag gatewayYour Google tags load from your own domain, through your CDN or hostingSites that want sturdier measurement with little changeLow to medium, depending on your hosting
Server-side GTMData goes to your own tagging server first, then on to Google and othersLarger stores and businesses with strict data needsHigher, with ongoing hosting costs
Google tag gateway is now open to all advertisers, with setup options for popular hosting and CDN providers. It helps your measurement hold up against browser restrictions without the cost of a full server-side setup. It is not a way around a visitor’s privacy choices, and we don’t treat it as one.

What we find

What we find in messy containers

Most containers we inherit have grown for years without anyone in charge.

The problem

Two containers, or GTM plus hard-coded tags

Conversions are counted twice, so your cost per lead looks half what it really is.

How we fix it

One container, with every duplicate removed.

The problem

Tags named “New Tag 12”

Nobody knows what each tag does, so nobody dares delete anything.

How we fix it

A clear naming system: platform, tag type and what it tracks.

The problem

Triggers that fire on every page

A purchase tag runs on page load and records sales that never happened.

How we fix it

Specific triggers tied to real actions, tested one by one.

The problem

Everyone has publish access

Freelancers and old agencies from years ago can still change your tracking.

How we fix it

Access cleaned up, with publish rights only for people who need them.

The problem

No version notes

When conversions drop, nobody can tell what changed or when.

How we fix it

Every publish has a note and a tested preview behind it.

How we work

Six steps, no surprises

Nothing touches your live site until it has been built and tested in a separate workspace.

  1. Audit

We export your container and check every tag, trigger and variable against what your website actually does.

  2. Plan

We write a tracking plan: what to measure, which platform needs it, and how it will fire.

  3. Build

We build or clean up the container in a GTM workspace, so your live site is untouched until it’s ready.

  4. Test

We test every tag in Preview mode and with Google’s Tag Assistant, on desktop and mobile.

  5. Publish

We publish with version notes, then watch reports closely for the next couple of days to confirm data is flowing.

  6. Document

You get a plain-English document listing every tag, what it does and who owns it.
