Why Google Ads in Melbourne is so competitive

Melbourne is a big market with a lot of businesses chasing the same customers. Greater Melbourne had 5,435,590 residents at 30 June 2025, about one in every five Australians, and it added more people that year than any other capital city. More people means more searches. It also means more businesses bidding on them.

The number of businesses keeps climbing too. Victoria added 19,581 actively trading businesses in 2025-26, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Plenty of them run Google Ads, which pushes up what everyone pays for a click, especially in busy categories like trades, legal, health and eCommerce.

Online shopping keeps growing as well. Australians spent a record $82.6 billion online in 2025, up 14% on the year before, and about eight in ten shoppers hunt for the best deal before they buy. For a Melbourne online store, that means shoppers compare you with every competitor on the same results page.

In a market like this, a lazy account gets expensive fast. Broad targeting, weak ads and poor tracking burn through budget before a single good lead comes in. The businesses that win in Melbourne target tightly, write ads that stand out and measure every call, form and sale. That’s exactly how we run your account.

Proof we can deliver

Any agency can promise results. Here’s what you can check before you spend a cent.

We’re a verified Google Partner. Google only gives Partner status to agencies that meet its standards for ad spend, account performance and certified staff. You can see our listing in Google’s Partners directory.

We do this for real businesses. We run Google Ads and search for Australian online retailers and B2B companies, from price-driven eCommerce stores to industrial groups with long sales cycles. A lot of our eCommerce clients are Melbourne businesses.

We prove it in month one. The free first month is our proof. You see the tracking, the leads and the sales before you pay us anything. If we haven’t earned month two, you walk away with your account and your data.

Why Melbourne businesses choose us

Most businesses that come to us have been burnt before. Long contracts, big fees, a junior account manager and reports full of clicks that never turned into customers. We built our service to fix every one of those problems.

That’s the short version of why we offer the first month free. We’re confident that once you see how we run your account, you won’t want to go back.

Your first month is free. Here's how it works.

We don’t ask you to trust a sales pitch. We ask you to judge us on a month of real work. Here’s what happens.

1. A free audit and strategy call

We look at your current account, website and tracking, and tell you what’s working and what’s wasting money. If you’re new to Google Ads, we map out the campaigns, keywords and suburbs that make sense for your business.

2. We fix the foundations

We set up or repair conversion tracking for calls, forms and online sales. We clean up your campaign structure, add negative keywords and connect your Google Merchant Center or CRM if you have one.

3. Month one is on us

We manage your campaigns for the full first month at no charge. You pay Google directly for your clicks, so every dollar of ad spend goes into your own account.

4. You decide what happens next

At the end of the month you get a clear report on leads, sales and cost per result. If you like what you see, we keep going month to month. If not, you keep everything we built. No contract and no awkward exit.

The free month covers our management fee. Your ad spend is paid straight to Google from your own account. We’ll confirm the details in writing before we start.

Google Ads expertise across Melbourne industries

Google Ads works differently in every industry. A plumber in Dandenong needs calls today. A software company in the CBD needs qualified demos over several months. Pick your industry to see how we’d approach it.

Google Ads for Melbourne online stores

eCommerce is where we do a lot of our work, and many of our online store clients are based in Melbourne. We know how Shopping ads, Performance Max and search campaigns fit together, and how to run them around profit instead of vanity revenue. See our eCommerce growth and Shopify development services too.

What works

Shopping and Performance Max campaigns fed by a clean product feed, backed by search campaigns for your brand and best sellers.

Where money leaks

Low-margin products soaking up budget, messy feeds with missing GTINs, and Performance Max quietly spending on your own brand name.

How we manage it

We group products by margin and performance, set return on ad spend targets that protect profit, and split brand from non-brand so you can see what’s really working.

What we track

Revenue, return on ad spend, profit by product group and new versus returning customers.

Google Ads for Melbourne trades and home services

When a hot water system dies or a roof starts leaking, people search, call and book fast. Speed, trust and the right suburbs decide who gets the job. See how we help small businesses grow.

What works

Search campaigns on urgent, high-intent terms, with call assets and ads that show your suburbs, licence and reviews.

Where money leaks

Targeting all of Melbourne when you only service one side of it, and paying for clicks from DIY researchers.

How we manage it

We target the suburbs you actually service, schedule ads around your call-taking hours and block DIY and job-seeker searches.

What we track

Calls, call length, quote requests and booked jobs.

Google Ads for Melbourne health, dental and allied health

Health searches are personal and local. People want someone close by, available soon and easy to book. The advertising rules are strict too, so ads need to be compliant from the start. Read more about our healthcare marketing.

What works

Search campaigns for treatments and services by suburb, with booking links and location assets tied to your Google Business Profile.

Where money leaks

Broad terms that attract students and researchers, and ads that trip Google’s healthcare policies and get limited.

How we manage it

We write ads that follow Google’s healthcare policies and Ahpra’s guidelines for advertising regulated health services, and we track bookings, not just clicks.

What we track

Online bookings, calls, new patient enquiries and cost per booking.

Google Ads for Melbourne law firms and professional services

Legal clicks are some of the most expensive in Google Ads. One good client can be worth thousands, but one sloppy campaign can burn a month’s budget in a week. See our law firm marketing.

What works

Tightly themed search campaigns by practice area, with ads that answer the real question and landing pages that make it easy to call.

Where money leaks

Broad match on terms like ‘free legal advice’, and clicks from people outside Victoria who can’t become clients.

How we manage it

Strict negative keyword lists, budgets set by practice area and call tracking, so you know which matters are worth paying for.

What we track

Qualified calls, consult bookings and cost per new matter.

Google Ads for Melbourne B2B, SaaS and industrial companies

B2B buyers don’t buy on the first click. They research, compare and bring in a team. Your Google Ads need to feed a sales process, not just a form inbox. See our B2B marketing and industrial marketing.

What works

Search campaigns on solution and problem keywords, remarketing for longer sales cycles, and lead forms connected to your CRM.

Where money leaks

Optimising for form fills when half of them are job seekers, students or spam.

How we manage it

We connect Google Ads to HubSpot, Salesforce or your CRM, send qualified and won deals back to Google, and let bidding chase the leads that turn into revenue.

What we track

Marketing qualified leads, sales qualified leads, pipeline value and closed revenue.

Google Ads for Melbourne real estate and property

Property decisions are big and slow. Google Ads works best when it catches sellers and buyers early and keeps you front of mind until they’re ready. See our real estate marketing.

What works

Search campaigns for appraisal and selling terms by suburb, plus remarketing to people who have viewed your listings.

Where money leaks

Paying for renters and tyre kickers when you want vendors.

How we manage it

Suburb-specific ads and landing pages, appraisal offers and tracking that follows a lead from enquiry to listing.

What we track

What affects your results in Melbourne

Your category

Legal, trades and health usually cost more per click than hospitality or retail.

Your suburbs

Targeting only where you can actually serve saves a lot of money.

Your website

A fast, clear landing page turns more of the same clicks into leads.

Your offer

A strong reason to choose you often beats a bigger bid.

We’ll be upfront about all of this in your Google Ads audit, including when Google Ads isn’t the right channel for you.

Google Shopping for online stores. CRM tracking for B2B.

Two things separate an average Google Ads account from a great one: a clean product feed for eCommerce, and a CRM connection for B2B lead generation. We set up both.

Google Shopping and Merchant Center

Shopping ads show your product, price and store name right at the top of Google. They’re often the first thing a shopper sees. They run off your product feed in Google Merchant Center, so the quality of that feed decides how well you perform.

We fix feed errors and disapproved products, write product titles that match how people search, add GTINs and product categories, and set up shipping and promotions properly. Then we run Shopping and Performance Max around your margins, so best sellers get the budget and low-margin lines don’t drain it. We work with Shopify, WooCommerce and most other platforms.

CRM tracking for B2B lead generation

In B2B, a form fill isn’t a customer. If Google only sees form fills, it will happily find you more of the wrong ones. That’s why we connect Google Ads to your CRM.

When a lead comes in, we capture the click ID with it. When your sales team qualifies or wins that lead in HubSpot, Salesforce, Pipedrive or Zoho, the result goes back to Google Ads as an offline conversion. Your campaigns learn what a real customer looks like and bid for more of them. You finally see cost per qualified lead and revenue by campaign.

Not sure which you need?

Many businesses need both. A Melbourne wholesaler might sell online through Shopping and win trade accounts through B2B lead generation. We’ll map it out in your free audit.

Google Ads works better with a full-service team behind it

Google Ads doesn’t work alone. Your ads are only as good as the page they land on, the offer you make and the follow-up that happens next. That’s why we offer a full digital marketing package, not just ad management.

Under one roof you get Google Ads, SEO, AI search optimisation, Meta ads, YouTube advertising, web design and Shopify development. One team, one plan and one report. No finger-pointing between agencies when results dip.

Start with Google Ads and add the rest when you’re ready, or bundle it all from day one. Either way, there’s still no lock-in contract.

Reporting you can actually read

You get a live dashboard in AgencyAnalytics that pulls data straight from Google Ads, Google Analytics 4 and your call tracking. No spreadsheets and no spin.

From click to customer

We connect each click to what happened next, so you can see which campaigns, keywords and suburbs bring in real business.

The Melbourne Google Ads playbook

Running your own account? These are the settings and habits that make the biggest difference in a competitive city. Use them whether you work with us or not.

Set location targeting to presence

By default, Google can show your ads to people who are only interested in Melbourne, even if they live in Brisbane or overseas. Change the location option to ‘Presence: people in or regularly in your included locations’. For most local businesses, this one setting stops a lot of wasted clicks.

Target suburbs, not the whole state

Add the suburbs or a radius around the areas you actually serve, and exclude the ones you don’t. Then check the location report every month and raise bids in the suburbs that convert best.

Match your ad schedule to how you work

If nobody answers the phone after 5pm, don’t run call-focused ads after 5pm. Use ad scheduling to show ads when you can respond, and plan around Melbourne public holidays like Melbourne Cup Day, when demand and staffing both change.

Use every free ad asset

Sitelinks, callouts, call assets, price assets and location assets from your Google Business Profile make your ad bigger and more useful. A bigger, more useful ad wins more clicks at the same bid.

Build a negative keyword list early

Add terms like free, jobs, salary, DIY, course and template if they don’t fit your business. Check your search terms report every week for the first month, then every couple of weeks after that.

Send clicks to a matching landing page

If someone searches for ’emergency electrician Richmond’, send them to a page about emergency electrical work that mentions the suburbs you cover and shows your phone number. Not your homepage.

Switch to smart bidding once you have data

Target cost per acquisition and target return on ad spend work well once a campaign has a steady flow of conversions. Before that, keep bidding simple so Google isn’t guessing with your money.

Plan early for the big sales moments

End of financial year, Black Friday, Boxing Day and Christmas drive huge spikes in online shopping. Build your budget, product feed and promotions a few weeks ahead, not on the day.

Plain-English glossary

CPC

Cost per click. What you pay each time someone clicks your ad.

Conversion

A valuable action, like a call, a form or a sale.

ROAS

Return on ad spend. Revenue earned for every dollar spent on ads.

Performance Max

A Google campaign type that runs across Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display and more from one campaign.

Merchant Center

Google’s tool for uploading your product feed so your products can show in Shopping ads.

Offline conversion

A sale or qualified lead from your CRM, sent back into Google Ads.

Targeting Melbourne suburb by suburb

Melbourne is huge, and it’s growing fastest on its edges. Melbourne’s west and south east added the most people of any part of the city in 2024-25, according to the ABS. Targeting the whole city usually wastes money on people you can’t serve or who won’t travel to you. We target by suburb, radius and region, and set bids around where your best customers come from.

CBD, Docklands and Southbank

Dense, competitive searches from office workers, residents and visitors. Strong for professional services, health and hospitality.

Inner north and inner west

Fitzroy, Brunswick, Footscray and Yarraville. Younger suburbs with strong demand for lifestyle, health, food and local services.

Inner south and Bayside

South Yarra, St Kilda, Brighton and Sandringham. Higher household spend, great for premium services and home improvement.

Eastern suburbs

Box Hill, Doncaster, Camberwell and Ringwood. Family households and established businesses across trades, health and education.

South east and the Peninsula

Dandenong, Clayton, Berwick and Frankston through to the Mornington Peninsula. Big trade and industrial demand plus fast-growing family areas.

Northern and western growth areas

Craigieburn, Epping, Tarneit and Werribee. New estates and new homes, which means strong demand for trades, childcare and local services.

Common Melbourne Google Ads mistakes we fix

We see the same problems again and again when we audit Melbourne accounts. Most are quick to fix and free up budget straight away.

Targeting all of Victoria

Paying for clicks from Mildura when you only service the eastern suburbs.

Leaving presence or interest on

Showing ads to people outside Melbourne who can’t buy from you.

Broad match with no negatives

Buying clicks from job seekers, students and bargain hunters.

No call tracking

Missing a big share of your leads because nobody counts phone calls.

Everything goes to the homepage

Making searchers hunt for what they asked for, so they leave.

A neglected product feed

Disapproved products and weak titles holding back your Shopping ads.

Optimising for junk leads

Letting Google chase form fills that never become customers.

Set and forget

Nobody checking search terms, bids or budgets week to week.

How to choose a Google Ads agency in Melbourne

Whoever you choose, ask these questions before you sign anything. A good agency will answer every one without dodging.

  • Are you a Google Partner? Check the answer in Google’s Partners directory, not just a logo on a website.
  • Who will actually run my account? You want the name and experience of the person doing the work.
  • Do I own the account? You should own your Google Ads account and data, even if you leave.
  • Is there a contract? Month-to-month agreements keep agencies honest. Long lock-ins do the opposite.
  • How do you track leads and sales? Clicks aren’t results. Ask how calls, forms, orders and CRM data are tracked.
  • What happens in the first month? You should get a clear plan, working tracking and a report you understand.

We’re happy to be measured against every one of these. Better still, see for yourself in a free first month.
