How to Generate Leads Online: A Step-by-Step Guide

Fix the foundations, capture people already searching, reach them before they search, bring back the ones who left and answer every lead fast. Here is how.

The short answer: Fix the foundations first: a clear offer, a website that converts and tracking you can trust. Then capture people already searching (Google Ads, SEO and Google Maps), reach people before they search (Meta, YouTube, LinkedIn), bring back the ones who didn’t enquire, and turn happy customers into referrals. Answer every lead fast.

Most businesses don’t have a traffic problem. They have a leads problem: visitors arrive, look around and leave. Before you spend another dollar on ads, it’s worth understanding how online lead generation actually works, and where most businesses leak.

What counts as a lead?

A lead is anyone who raises their hand: a phone call, a form enquiry, a booking, a quote request, a chat message or a download that gives you their email. Decide which of these matter most to your business, because that’s what you’ll track and optimise for.

Step 1: Sharpen your offer

People don’t enquire because you exist. They enquire because you solve a specific problem, for someone like them, in a way that feels low-risk. Make your offer clear: who it’s for, what they get, why you, and what happens next. A free quote, audit, consultation or trial lowers the barrier to that first step.

Step 2: Make your website convert

  • Put a clear headline and call to action above the fold on every key page.
  • Show proof: reviews, results, logos and real photos.
  • Keep forms short. Ask only what you need to follow up.
  • Make your phone number tappable on mobile.
  • Make sure pages load quickly.

A small lift in conversion rate makes every other channel cheaper.

Step 3: Track every lead properly

Set up GA4 key events for forms, calls and bookings, and connect conversion tracking to your ad platforms. If you can’t see which channel produced a lead, you can’t tell what’s working. Better still, track which leads become customers.

Step 4: Capture people who are already searching

This is where leads are cheapest to win, because the buyer is already looking.

  • Google Ads: Show up the moment someone searches for what you sell. Fast to start and easy to measure. See our Google Ads management.
  • SEO: Rank for the searches your buyers make. Slower to build, but it compounds. See our guide on how to rank higher on Google.
  • Google Business Profile: For local businesses, the Maps listing drives calls and direction requests.
  • AI search: More buyers now ask ChatGPT and Google’s AI for recommendations. See how to rank on ChatGPT.

Social and video ads create demand among people who fit your ideal customer but aren’t looking yet.

  • Meta ads on Facebook and Instagram, for most consumer and local businesses. See our Meta ads service.
  • YouTube ads, for products and services worth explaining. See YouTube advertising.
  • LinkedIn, for reaching B2B decision-makers by job title and industry.

Step 6: Bring back the ones who didn’t enquire

Most visitors leave without acting. Retargeting shows them a follow-up ad, such as a testimonial, an offer or an answer to a common objection, so you stay front of mind until they’re ready. For this to work on Meta, you need the pixel installed properly. Our guide on how to set up Meta Pixel walks you through it.

Step 7: Use lead magnets for longer decisions

If your buyers take time to decide, offer something useful in exchange for an email: a checklist, a price guide, a calculator or a short email course. Then nurture those contacts with helpful emails until they’re ready to talk.

Step 8: Turn customers into referrals

Your happiest customers are your cheapest source of new leads. Ask for reviews and referrals, make it easy, and consider a simple thank-you reward.

Step 9: Respond fast

Speed wins. A lead contacted within minutes is far more likely to become a customer than one who waits until tomorrow. Set up instant email or SMS acknowledgements and make sure someone owns follow-up every day.

Which channel should you start with?

Channel Speed to leads Best for
Google Ads Days Services people actively search for
Google Business Profile Weeks Local businesses
SEO Months, then compounding Long-term, lower-cost lead flow
Meta ads Days to weeks Consumer, local and eCommerce businesses
LinkedIn Weeks B2B and high-value services
Referrals and email Ongoing Every business with happy customers

Most businesses do best starting with search, because it captures existing demand, then layering in social, retargeting and referrals. That’s the thinking behind our PSRBL model: Prospect, Search, Retarget, Brand and Loyalty.
